MW Rumor: Apple to spin off new brand
This is less of a rumor and more 'wild speculation,' but I like my speculation like I like
my women, wild and completely unfounded. Peter Stone thinks that Apple will be
introducing a bunch of cool new stuff at Macworld, but the big announcement will be that Apple is going to announce a
'split brand.' Apple Computer on one side and 'Apple Entertaiment' on the other.I don't think this is going to happen, however, lots of folks think of Apple as the 'iPod company,' so there is a chance that it could happen. Heck, now that Mac will be using Intel processors anything can happen!

Highly possible if you look at it as a way for Apple to circumvent the legal problems they've been having with the other Apple. If it's not Apple Computer distributing the music but Apple Entertainment would they be 'out of the woods?'

Yeah, but think about it; no more lawsuits from Apple Records! And maybe even the Beatles on the iTMS?
Also, this would make sense in the context of organisation; Apple Computer would be able to focus, with the whole Intel business, on hardware and software of the Macintosh ilk, and Apple Entertainment would fiddle with iPods, iTunes, maybe iLife and so forth. Makes sense!

Apple Entertainment would almost certainly screw them over with the legal agreement with the music label Apple.
Maybe iTunes Entertainment, if they were to create a separate brand?

First, Peter Stone does not work in the tech business and writes almost nothing about the tech business if his blog is any indication. According to his web page, he is a copywriter and writing coach.
Second, he thinks Apple will split off the brand, presumably Apple stuff in one camp and iPod/consumer stuff in the other. He doesn't say the COMPANY is splitting. Apple, of course, is not going to announce anything like this anytime soon, or Wall Street would have caught wind of it before a writing coach did.
Third, it's a prediction. He doesn't say he has information to indicate that he thinks he's right.
This is not a rumor.

I agree with Ben, but the new entity couldn't have "Apple" in its name. I mean, Apple and Apple have been duking it out since before the iPod or iTunes, so I doubt "Apple Entertainment" would pass the smell test.

Me thinks it will never happen. Jobs is big on "brand". With one there is a lot of cross-over. With two not so much. With one, all your advertising/marketing help all products, with two, not so much or at all.
I could see Jobs dropping the "computer" from the corporate name though.

Remember, this is what Nintendo did with its Pokemon division, they formed The Pokemon Company... it could very well happen.
