Apple has significantly revised its App Review Guidelines, now explicitly permitting PC emulators on the iPhone and iPad. This change, effective from August 1, 2024, marks a notable shift in Apple’s approach to app store policies, potentially broadening the scope of available applications on its devices.

New Rules for Emulator Apps

According to Apple’s updated guidelines, PC emulator apps can now offer game downloads directly within the app. This modification to the guidelines falls under section 4.7, which deals with streaming games and emulators. Previously, emulator apps were restricted from downloading games, limiting their functionality and appeal.

Compliance Requirements

In addition to allowing downloads, the updated rules state that emulator apps must comply with specific points within section 4.7, particularly 4.7.2 and 4.7.3, to be eligible for Notarization. This compliance is essential for the apps to be included in third-party app storefronts, especially within the European Union. Notarization ensures that these apps meet Apple’s security and functionality standards.

Impact on Developers and Users

For developers, this update is welcome news. It follows the inclusion of UTM SE, the first PC emulator for iOS, in the App Store in July after significant regulatory hurdles. With the new guidelines, more emulator apps are expected to enter the App Store, offering users a wider array of gaming options.

Users can now anticipate a more enriched gaming experience on their iPhones and iPads. The ability to download games directly from emulator apps simplifies the process, making it easier to enjoy classic and retro games on modern devices.

Apple’s decision to revise its App Review Guidelines to allow PC emulators signifies a progressive move towards expanding the capabilities of iOS devices. This update not only benefits developers by easing restrictions but also enhances the user experience by broadening the range of available apps and games. As more emulator apps gain approval, iPhone and iPad users can look forward to a more versatile and engaging digital landscape.
