In a move that could delight selfie enthusiasts, Apple is rumored to be making a substantial upgrade to the front camera in its forthcoming iPhone 17. According to sources, the new model will feature a 24MP sensor, a significant jump from the current 12MP camera found in the iPhone 15 series.

A Long-Awaited Upgrade

Apple has not upgraded its front camera hardware in five years, sticking to software improvements such as Photonic Engine and Smart HDR updates. This new 24MP sensor, expected to be paired with six plastic lens elements, will replace the current 12MP sensor that has been standard since the iPhone 11. This enhancement promises to significantly improve photo quality, catering to users who rely heavily on their front cameras for selfies and video calls.

Analyst Predictions

Haitong Securities analyst Jeff Pu is among those predicting this exciting development. He suggests that all models of the iPhone 17 will feature this upgraded front camera. Pu’s insights align with earlier predictions from renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who also anticipated a 24MP selfie camera for at least one model in the iPhone 17 lineup.

Beyond the Camera

The iPhone 17’s improvements aren’t limited to the front camera. Analysts predict the new model will also introduce a 6.3-inch display option, expanding the range of available sizes to 6.1, 6.3, 6.6, and 6.9 inches. The device is expected to be powered by the A19 chip, with regular models featuring 8GB of RAM and Pro models boasting 12GB of RAM.

Additionally, only the Pro models are likely to sport three main 48MP cameras. In contrast, the regular iPhone 17 will combine 48MP and 12MP sensors, while a rumored iPhone 17 Slim may feature a single 48MP main camera.

What to Expect

As Apple continues to push the boundaries of smartphone photography, the anticipated enhancements to the iPhone 17’s selfie camera reflect the company’s commitment to meeting user demands for higher quality and innovative features. With these rumored upgrades, the iPhone 17 could set a new standard for smartphone cameras, particularly for front-facing photography.
