In a recent interview, Apple’s Jenny Chen and Ty Jordan explained the development of the new Math Notes and Smart Script features in iPadOS 18. These features stem from years of Apple technology and innovation, enhancing the user experience for iPad owners.

Evolution of Math Notes and Smart Script

Math Notes, a new feature in iPadOS 18, recognizes handwritten equations and solves them, replicating the user’s handwriting. Smart Script smooths out handwriting, making it more legible while retaining its unique characteristics. According to Chen, these features build on the technology Apple developed for Scribble, its handwriting recognition tool.

Leveraging Existing Technology

Chen explained that Apple’s work on Scribble laid the foundation for Math Notes and Smart Script.

We spent a lot of time working on recognizing text with Scribble. Math Notes takes this technology to the next level by not only recognizing but also synthesizing text that resembles the user’s handwriting.

Enhancing Handwriting Capabilities

Jordan highlighted the practical applications of these features. Users can manipulate handwritten text similarly to typed text.

If you tap and hold your pencil, you can move words around, and they will reflow in your paragraph.
