This fall, Apple will launch tvOS 18 alongside iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, bringing exciting updates to Apple TV. While Apple TV software updates often fly under the radar, this year’s enhancements are poised to stand out.
InSight for Real-Time Information
One of the key features is InSight, similar to Amazon’s X-ray. InSight delivers real-time details about actors, characters, and music for Apple TV+ content. When viewers pause a show, they can access detailed information on the cast and music directly from the Apple TV or an iPhone used as a remote.
Enhanced Audio and Subtitles
Apple has made significant improvements to its audio and subtitle features. The new Enhance Dialogue setting, now powered by machine learning, focuses on vocal clarity, making it easier to hear dialogue over background noise. This feature works with HDMI-connected speakers, iPhones, iPads, AirPods, and other Bluetooth devices. Additionally, subtitles now appear more intelligently, such as when content is muted or rewound.
FaceTime and SharePlay Updates
FaceTime on Apple TV introduces real-time Live Captions during calls, initially available in English for users in the U.S. and Canada. SharePlay also received an update, allowing everyone in a FaceTime call to contribute to a party playlist by scanning a QR code.
New Screen Savers and Projector Support
tvOS 18 personalizes the Apple TV experience with new screen saver options, including Portraits, TV and Movies, and Snoopy themes. For projector users, Apple has added support for the 21:9 aspect ratio, enhancing widescreen viewing.
