Apple plans to introduce its self-developed 5G modem in iPhones starting in 2025. This marks a big shift as the company moves away from relying on Qualcomm for its 5G technology. The iPhone SE and select iPhone 17 models will be the first to use Apple’s new modem.

iPhone SE and iPhone 17 to Feature Apple’s 5G Modem

The next-generation iPhone SE, expected in early 2025, will be the first to feature Apple’s 5G modem. Later that year, some iPhone 17 models will follow suit. This decision is a break from Apple’s usual strategy, as the iPhone SE is a lower-cost device.

Apple’s Move to Control More Hardware

Apple has worked on its 5G modem since acquiring Intel’s modem division in 2019. By designing the modem in-house, Apple seeks to have more control over its hardware and reduce dependence on suppliers. However, challenges remain, especially with integrating mmWave technology, which Apple still needs Qualcomm to supply.

Qualcomm’s Role Faces Uncertainty

Despite Apple’s progress, Qualcomm will continue providing 5G modems for certain models, likely the iPhone 17 Pro series. Apple still relies on Qualcomm’s mmWave technology, especially in markets like the U.S. This arrangement will likely last until 2027, when their current contracts end.

Apple’s move to build its own 5G modem marks a significant step in its hardware strategy. By 2025, Apple aims to equip some iPhone models with this modem, signaling a shift that could impact both its supply chain and companies like Qualcomm.
