Apple has withdrawn its watchOS 11.1 beta release following reports of significant issues, including devices freezing and becoming unresponsive. Users began noticing problems shortly after the beta was made available on October 1, 2024. Multiple complaints, including those shared on Reddit, highlighted how Apple Watches would lock up after receiving notifications or messages, rendering the device unusable without frequent restarts.
Apple’s Response to User Complaints
One Reddit user explained that their watch froze immediately after receiving a text message and required constant rebooting, but the problem would reoccur within minutes. Some users found temporary relief by disabling notifications on their devices, but this workaround did not resolve all issues. Apple quickly responded by pulling the beta version and recommending users avoid the update until further notice.
Similar Issues with Recent Software Updates
The problems with watchOS 11.1 beta are not an isolated incident. In recent months, Apple has faced similar challenges with other software updates. Earlier, the company had to pull the iPadOS 18 update after it caused issues for certain iPad models, and HomePod mini users experienced bricking problems with a beta version of HomePod 18.1.
While Apple works on a fix, users are advised to refrain from installing the beta version on their Apple Watches. The company has not yet provided a timeline for when the revised beta will be available.
