A rare Apple Macintosh prototype, known as the ‘Twiggy’ model, is expected to reach up to $120,000 at an auction in New York. This unique device, created in 1983, stands out due to its 5.25-inch disk drive, unlike later models that used 3.5-inch drives. Collectors are eager to acquire this rare and historically significant piece of Apple’s early technology.

The Story Behind the Twiggy Drive

The ‘Twiggy’ Macintosh prototype features a 5.25-inch disk drive, a design Apple eventually scrapped due to reliability issues. Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder, ordered most of the pre-production units to be destroyed. This decision makes the remaining prototypes, like the one up for auction, extremely rare and valuable.

Auction and Details

The auction, hosted by Bonhams, runs from October 13 to October 23. The prototype includes its original components, such as a keyboard with a handwritten serial number and a prototype mouse. Additionally, it comes with a “Mac Word” disk, an early version of Mac software. Bonhams estimates the price between $80,000 and $120,000, but the prototype may surpass those numbers. In 2019, a similar model sold for $150,075 at auction.
