Apple Silicon iMacs Face Screen Issues After Two Years

A surge of complaints has hit Apple’s online forums as users report screen issues with their Apple Silicon M1 iMacs. These reports describe persistent dark horizontal lines appearing on screens roughly two years after purchase. The issue affects the 24-inch iMac models, with many owners voicing frustration over costly repair fees since most warranties have expired.

Widespread Complaints

Users first reported these screen issues in October 2023. Since then, the complaints have amassed into a thread that spans 17 pages on Apple’s community forums. Owners say the horizontal lines diminish the device’s usability and visual quality, impacting productivity and enjoyment. In one thread, a user described the problem as “appearing without any physical damage,” further noting the lack of explanation from Apple on the root cause.

Apple has yet to officially recognize the issue or offer a free repair program. For those without AppleCare+, a screen replacement typically costs between $600 and $700. That’s a steep price for many, especially as it approaches the cost of a new base-model Mac.

Possible Causes

Some users have offered their own theories on the cause of the screen problem. One suggests that a flex cable inside the iMac’s display may be the culprit. According to this theory, the cable sustains high voltage to power the LCD. Over time, the voltage leads to burnout, causing the screen’s lines. However, Apple has not confirmed this explanation, leaving users to speculate.

One affected user reported that a senior Apple representative authorized a free repair, though such cases appear rare. For most customers, Apple service centers have deemed the issue irreparable, advising complete screen replacements.

Potential Recurrence in Newer Models

Worryingly, some users with the latest M3 iMacs have started experiencing similar problems. This development raises concerns that Apple might not have addressed the underlying issue in newer iMac models. The lack of response from Apple adds to user frustration, as many hope for a recall or a repair program.

In the meantime, users experiencing screen problems have few options. They can either pay for repairs, hope for Apple to take responsibility, or connect their iMacs to an external monitor to bypass the issue.

As complaints grow, Apple faces pressure to address the problem and provide support to affected customers. For now, M1 iMac owners are left waiting, hoping for a response that might ease their repair costs.
