In the latest survey by Piper Sandler, teenagers have shown a continued loyalty to Apple, with many planning to upgrade to the iPhone 16. The survey, conducted in fall 2024, polled approximately 13,500 teens, with 22% expressing interest in the new iPhone 16 model. Although slightly down from 23% last year, the demand for Apple’s latest smartphone remains robust among the younger generation.

Apple’s Dominance in Teen Markets

Apple products are a staple for today’s teens. The survey found that 87% of teenagers own an iPhone, reflecting a steady trend from previous years. Additionally, 88% of teens stated that they expect their next smartphone to be an iPhone, underscoring Apple’s dominance in this demographic. Teenagers’ preference for Apple extends beyond iPhones, with 70% owning AirPods and many also possessing iPads and Apple Watches.

Key Reasons for Upgrading

When asked why they’re planning to upgrade, 29% of teens cited Apple Intelligence features as a major draw. However, a portion of teens admitted they were unfamiliar with Apple Intelligence, showing that brand loyalty and new features still play a significant role in purchasing decisions. The survey also highlighted a generational trend: most teens are using iPhones that are around three generations behind, typically passed down within families.

Beyond smartphones, teens are also drawn to Apple’s other offerings. AirPods are especially popular, with 70% of respondents owning a pair. Moreover, a significant percentage of teens own iPads and Apple Watches, and around 10% use Apple TV, though it constitutes a minor part of their overall media consumption. Apple Music also has a strong following, with one-third of teens accessing the service, and nearly 28% paying for their subscriptions rather than relying on Family Sharing plans.

As Apple continues to innovate, it’s clear that the company’s influence on the youth market remains strong, setting the stage for another successful year with the release of the iPhone 16.
