Apple has cut production of its Vision Pro headset, sparking concerns that the company could stop manufacturing the device by the end of 2024. Sources reveal that Apple reduced orders over the summer, with the possibility of halting production entirely if inventory issues persist.

Vision Pro Struggles with Low Demand

Despite its innovative features, Vision Pro has not reached mass-market appeal. Sales have lagged behind other Apple devices. Analysts estimate Apple sold about 370,000 units in the first three quarters of 2024, with 50,000 more expected by year-end. However, Apple manufactured 600,000 headsets, leaving around 200,000 in stock.

Slowing Production

Luxshare, Apple’s assembly partner for Vision Pro, reduced production from 2,000 units per day to just 1,000. Apple reportedly informed Luxshare that it might wind down production by November if current sales trends continue. Meanwhile, Apple is working on a second-generation headset, expected in 2026. This new version will likely feature lower-resolution displays and fewer premium features, aimed at a wider consumer base.

Future Plans

While Vision Pro’s future looks uncertain, Apple plans to release a more affordable version. A $2,000 model is anticipated in 2026, with some cost-saving measures, such as removing the Eyesight feature. Additionally, Apple is exploring other innovations, including smart glasses, which may eventually replace Vision Pro.

Apple’s decision to cut Vision Pro production signals a shift in priorities. With inventory piling up and sales below expectations, the company is preparing for new models and innovations. Despite the challenges, Apple’s focus on affordability and fresh technology suggests that wearable tech remains a key part of its strategy.
