Apple’s much-anticipated lower-cost Vision Pro headset has hit a major delay, extending beyond 2027, according to reliable industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The tech giant now plans to upgrade the current Apple Vision Pro model with the M5 chip in 2025.
The Reason for Delays
Kuo suggests that Apple has reevaluated its approach, citing past experiences with product launches like the HomePod series. Despite releasing the more affordable HomePod mini, Apple’s smart speaker line did not achieve widespread success. The company seems determined not to repeat this with the Vision Pro lineup. Simply slashing prices, Apple argues, won’t create compelling use cases for the headset. Additionally, Apple has faced challenges encouraging rapid development of apps and experiences, which are critical for the device’s success.
Future Vision Pro Prospects
While the M5-powered Vision Pro will arrive in 2025, the possibility of a lower-cost model remains. However, that version could differ significantly. A Bloomberg report adds weight to this speculation, claiming Apple may offload most computing duties to a user’s iPhone, transforming the Vision Pro into more of an accessory. Such a model could resemble augmented reality (AR) glasses more than the current mixed-reality powerhouse.
Apple’s strategic pivot raises questions about whether the company can sustain excitement for Vision Pro. It will also test whether developers can deliver unique, engaging apps that make the headset indispensable.
