Apple’s App Store age ratings system is under scrutiny following a report from the Heat Initiative and ParentsTogether Action. The findings suggest that Apple’s rating system inadequately protects children, with numerous apps posing safety risks despite being rated appropriate for younger users.

Report Highlights Risks in App Store Apps

Over a single day, researchers reviewed 800 apps across categories like beauty, chat, diet, and gaming. The results were alarming—more than 200 apps contained content unsuitable for children but were still accessible under misleading ratings.

For instance, some weight-loss apps marketed to children encouraged unhealthy behaviors like 20-hour fasting. Chat apps, which are often rated 17+, posed risks by enabling interactions with strangers. Other categories, such as gaming, featured violent content and “XXXSpicy” features, including inappropriate dares.

Flaws in Apple’s Rating Process

Apple’s system relies on developers to self-report app content via a questionnaire, forming the basis for age ratings. However, the report criticized the lack of independent oversight and questioned whether Apple verifies the ratings post-publication. Critics argue this process shifts accountability from Apple to developers, undermining its promise to families for a safer App Store experience.

Calls for Reform

Child safety advocates recommend Apple adopt a third-party review system, similar to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) for video games. They also urge greater transparency and stricter post-launch checks to ensure age ratings remain appropriate. The report emphasizes the need for Apple to swiftly correct misleading ratings and penalize developers who attempt to exploit the system.

Apple Responds to Criticism

In a statement, Apple defended its parental controls and App Store policies, asserting its commitment to privacy and child safety. The company highlighted its stricter review process for apps designed for kids and its actions to address content mismatches when identified.

Despite Apple’s assurances, safety groups insist more must be done to safeguard children, calling for effective oversight and clearer accountability.
