Despite Apple Pay’s widespread popularity, Walmart remains firm in its decision not to accept it. As of 2025, the retail giant still refuses NFC-based payments, including Google Pay and tap-to-pay credit cards. Instead, Walmart promotes its proprietary payment solutions like Walmart Pay and Scan & Go.
A Walmart spokesperson confirmed this decision, stating that their in-house technologies provide a seamless and touchless shopping experience. With more than 4,500 U.S. stores, Walmart prioritizes systems it can fully control over adopting third-party platforms.
Walmart’s Payment Alternatives
Walmart Pay, launched in 2016, allows customers to scan QR codes at checkout using the Walmart app. To use it, shoppers must create a Walmart account and save their payment details within the app. While this process is less convenient than NFC payments, Walmart claims it offers a secure and integrated experience.
The Scan & Go feature, available to Walmart+ and Sam’s Club members, takes touchless shopping a step further. Shoppers can scan product barcodes while browsing and skip checkout lines entirely. These solutions ensure Walmart retains full control over transaction data and customer interactions.
Why Walmart Rejects NFC Payments
Walmart’s decision to reject Apple Pay and similar services stems from its desire to maintain autonomy. NFC systems like Apple Pay limit a retailer’s access to transaction data. By encouraging the use of its own app, Walmart not only controls payment processing but also gains valuable insights into customer behavior.
Additionally, Walmart avoids transaction fees associated with NFC payment platforms. This cost-saving measure allows the retailer to focus on developing its proprietary solutions.
A Diverging Trend
While Walmart resists NFC payments, many major retailers have embraced them. Kroger and Home Depot, once NFC holdouts, now accept Apple Pay, citing customer demand. Interestingly, Walmart’s Canadian stores have accepted Apple Pay since 2020, showing a regional variation in its strategy.
For now, Walmart appears committed to its independent payment systems. Whether this strategy continues in an evolving retail landscape remains to be seen. Shoppers seeking Apple Pay-friendly options may need to look elsewhere.
