Apple TV+ has agreed to invest more in French and EU audiovisual content. Under a four-year deal with the French government, the platform will allocate 20% of its annual French revenue to local productions. Most of this funding will come from subscription sales, with some support from partnerships like the one with Canal+.
This initiative aligns with France’s push to protect cultural diversity in media.
Independent Productions to Benefit
Seventy percent of the funds will support independent productions. French audiovisual groups, including AnimFrance and SPI, praised the move. They see it as a boost for local creators and a way to integrate Apple into France’s regulatory system.
“This deal highlights Apple TV+’s commitment to renewing and diversifying French audiovisual content,” stated the organizations.
Apple TV+ has already produced French-language projects like La Maison, a drama about the fashion industry, and A L’ombre Des Forêts, a six-episode thriller. This new deal aims to expand such efforts, increasing non-English content across Europe.
Aligning with EU Streaming Rules
This agreement helps Apple meet the EU rule that requires 30% of streaming content to come from EU countries. The regulation, adopted in 2018, encourages platforms like Apple TV+, Netflix, and Amazon Prime to invest in regional productions.
France’s strategy could inspire similar agreements in other EU countries. These efforts may lead to more local-language shows reaching global streaming audiences.
Supporting Cultural Diversity
This deal highlights the importance of diverse content in streaming. By investing in French and EU productions, Apple TV+ supports local storytelling while meeting regulatory requirements.
The partnership is expected to enrich Apple TV+’s global library and contribute to the growth of Europe’s creative industries.
