Apple Cancels Plans for Mac-Connected AR Glasses

Apple has ended its project to develop Mac-connected augmented reality (AR) glasses. The decision follows difficulties in meeting expectations and overcoming technical challenges.

An Affordable Alternative to Vision Pro

The scrapped device, called N107 internally, aimed to be a lightweight and budget-friendly alternative to the costly Apple Vision Pro. Unlike the Vision Pro, which functions on its own, these AR glasses needed a Mac for processing power. The goal was to provide a more accessible entry into Apple’s AR ecosystem.

However, the project ran into several roadblocks, including display limitations and battery concerns. Since the glasses had to stay connected to a Mac, they lost appeal. As a result, Apple executives chose to redirect resources to other AR projects.

Apple engineers faced trade-offs between performance and usability. The glasses needed external power to function well, which raised concerns about convenience. This approach ultimately made them less practical for users.

Meanwhile, the AR market keeps evolving. Competitors like Meta are focusing on standalone smart glasses instead of tethered solutions. Apple now seems to be refining its Vision Pro lineup and working on more advanced standalone AR products.

Apple’s Future AR Plans

Even though Apple has dropped this project, it remains committed to augmented reality. The company is expected to enhance the Vision Pro and develop new AR and VR devices. Analysts predict Apple will introduce more affordable AR options in the future, possibly integrating AR features into existing products.

Canceling this project does not mean Apple is stepping back from AR. Instead, the company is prioritizing innovations that better align with market trends and user needs.
