Apple is reportedly reconsidering its partnership with Chinese display manufacturer BOE due to ongoing quality issues with its OLED panels for iPhones. The company has struggled to meet Apple’s strict quality standards, leading to concerns about future supply chain stability.

BOE Struggles to Meet Apple’s Quality Standards

BOE has been supplying LTPS AMOLED displays for iPhone 14, 15, and 16 models. However, the company has faced persistent production setbacks. Since early 2024, BOE has only managed to deliver approximately 7-8 million panels—far below Apple’s 40 million-unit order. The quality problems, expected to take at least six weeks to resolve, could impact Apple’s production schedule.

This is not the first time BOE has faced challenges with Apple. In 2023, the company struggled with light leakage issues around the Dynamic Island cutout on iPhone 15 displays. That problem led Apple to significantly reduce its orders from BOE.

Samsung and LG Poised to Benefit

With BOE failing to meet expectations, Apple may redirect its orders to Samsung Display and LG Display. Industry sources suggest that Samsung is most likely to receive the bulk of the orders. LG Display, on the other hand, is primarily focused on producing LTPO AMOLED displays for Apple’s high-end iPhone Pro models.

Apple has relied on multiple suppliers to ensure a steady flow of high-quality displays. BOE’s inability to meet Apple’s needs could further strengthen Samsung and LG’s positions as dominant players in the OLED market.

Impact on Future iPhone Production

If Apple fully shifts away from BOE, it could have significant implications for the iPhone supply chain. While Samsung and LG have the capacity to handle increased production, any disruption in the transition could lead to potential delays.

As Apple continues refining its supply chain strategy, it remains to be seen whether BOE can resolve its quality issues or if Apple will permanently cut ties with the supplier.
