Apple’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) remains firm, but CEO Tim Cook acknowledges that legal changes could impact future policies. Speaking at the company’s annual shareholder meeting on February 25, Cook reassured investors that Apple’s core values would remain unchanged, even as external pressures mount.
Shareholder Pushback and Apple’s Response
During the meeting, Apple shareholders overwhelmingly voted to maintain the company’s DEI initiatives despite a proposal from the conservative think tank, the National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR). The group argued that DEI policies pose potential legal, financial, and reputational risks. However, Apple’s leadership urged investors to reject the proposal, emphasizing that diversity strengthens the company’s workforce.

While the motion was defeated, Cook acknowledged that Apple might need to adjust its DEI framework if future legal mandates require it. “As the legal landscape around this issue evolves, we may need to make some changes to comply,” Cook said. “But our north star of dignity and respect for everyone and our work to that end will never waver.”
The Broader Corporate Shift on DEI
Apple’s stance comes amid a growing trend of U.S. corporations scaling back diversity programs in response to political and legal challenges. Companies like Meta, Amazon, and Goldman Sachs have already modified or reduced their DEI initiatives, partly to align with changing government expectations.
The debate over corporate DEI policies has intensified following the Supreme Court’s ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, which declared race-based college admissions unconstitutional. While the decision does not directly target corporate DEI programs, it has fueled concerns that similar legal challenges may arise in the private sector.
Apple’s Unwavering Commitment to Inclusion
Despite potential regulatory shifts, Apple continues to champion workplace diversity. Cook reiterated that Apple does not enforce hiring quotas but instead fosters an environment where people from diverse backgrounds can contribute meaningfully.
Apple’s stance on DEI remains clear: unless legally required, the company has no intention of scaling back its inclusion efforts. As legal challenges continue to evolve, it remains to be seen whether Apple will be forced to modify its approach. For now, the tech giant stands firm, reinforcing that diversity remains a core pillar of its corporate identity.
