Apple Glass Still Possible as Apple Reconsiders Wearable Tech

Apple is reportedly revisiting its plans for smart glasses, despite setbacks with its Apple Vision Pro headset. The company is now considering a lighter, standalone AR glasses device, which some analysts believe could launch by 2030.

The Apple Vision Pro, which debuted earlier this year, faced lukewarm commercial reception. Critics cited its bulky design and high price as barriers to mass adoption. In response, Apple is exploring new wearable form factors, including a glasses-style device that could offer augmented reality (AR) capabilities without the weight of a headset.

Challenges in Apple’s Wearable Strategy

Developing a lightweight Apple Glass poses significant design challenges. The main hurdles include:

  • Battery life – Apple needs a solution that doesn’t make the glasses too heavy.
  • AR functionality – The device must balance performance and efficiency.
  • Privacy concerns – Smart glasses with built-in cameras often raise surveillance and security issues.

Apple has been working on various wearable prototypes since 2017. Internal testing has occurred in secrecy, but leaks suggest the company remains committed to the concept.

A Rival to Meta’s Smart Glasses?

Reports indicate that Apple is also developing a product similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban Smart Glasses. Unlike full AR glasses, this version would not include AR overlays but could feature:

  • Cameras for capturing photos and video
  • Microphones for voice commands
  • AI-powered features for hands-free interaction

If released, this product could be Apple’s first step into the smart glasses market, bridging the gap until a full-fledged AR device is ready.

What’s Next for Apple Glass?

Apple is expected to continue refining its wearables strategy, but mass production of Apple Glass remains years away. Some experts believe a commercial launch may not happen until 2028 or later.

For now, Apple’s focus remains on Vision Pro, but the dream of lightweight Apple Glass is far from dead.
