Apple Music Classical Goes Web-Based Before Mac App Release

Apple Music Classical has officially launched on the web, allowing subscribers to stream their favorite classical pieces from a browser. The service, which Apple originally released as an iPhone-exclusive app in 2023, has taken a long road to expansion, finally arriving on the web before receiving a dedicated Mac application.

A Delayed but Welcome Expansion

Apple acquired Primephonic in 2021, aiming to create a specialized classical music experience. However, the transition took longer than expected. Apple Music Classical debuted on the iPhone in 2023 and then made its way to Android two months later. It wasn’t until November 2023 that iPad users received access to the app.

Now, after almost two years, Apple has introduced the service on classical.music.apple.com. Users can log in to stream their favorite compositions and explore a vast catalog of recordings. However, despite this progress, Mac users still lack a native app, leaving them dependent on the web version for now.

Performance Issues and Limitations

Initial user feedback highlights some technical flaws in the web version. Reports suggest that some tracks take longer to start, while others fail to play altogether. Additionally, users cannot navigate within the platform without interrupting playback, a frustrating limitation for those hoping for a seamless experience.

Despite these setbacks, Apple’s move to bring the service to the web marks a significant step. It effectively allows Mac users to access Apple Music Classical, even without a standalone macOS app.

What’s Next for Apple Music Classical?

With this latest update, Apple TV 4K remains the only major Apple device without access to Apple Music Classical. Given the slow rollout so far, it remains unclear when—or if—a dedicated Mac app will arrive. However, Apple’s gradual expansion suggests that more improvements could be on the way.

Final Thoughts

Apple Music Classical’s web launch is a step forward, but its lack of a Mac app and performance issues remain concerns. Still, for classical music lovers, this update provides a new way to enjoy the genre across devices.
