Apple Studio Display 2: MiniLED, ProMotion, and More Rumors

Apple is reportedly working on an updated Studio Display, with rumors suggesting MiniLED backlighting, a higher refresh rate, and Thunderbolt 5. The current Studio Display, launched in early 2022, may soon get a hardware refresh to meet modern technology standards.

MiniLED for Better Contrast and Brightness

A key rumored upgrade is MiniLED backlighting. Unlike the current Studio Display’s LED panel, MiniLED allows localized dimming, improving contrast, brightness, and color accuracy. Though not as advanced as OLED, it offers deeper blacks and better picture quality at a lower cost.

Industry analyst Ross Young previously claimed Apple planned a 27-inch MiniLED Studio Display in 2022, but delays pushed it back. Fresh leaks suggest Apple may finally release the MiniLED version in late 2025.

ProMotion Could Boost Refresh Rate

Another possible enhancement is ProMotion technology, which supports variable refresh rates up to 120Hz. The current Studio Display and Pro Display XDR are limited to 60Hz, making them less ideal for smoother motion and reduced input lag.

Supply chain leaks suggest the new display will keep its 5K resolution but may introduce a higher refresh rate to match ProMotion-enabled MacBooks and iPads.

Thunderbolt 5 and Other Features

Apple may also upgrade the display with Thunderbolt 5. This standard doubles bandwidth to 80Gbps, supports multiple 8K monitors, and allows higher power delivery up to 240W.

Apple is expected to retain an A-series chip to enhance features like Center Stage and Spatial Audio. However, there are no confirmed details on pricing or design changes yet.

Expected Release Date

Reports indicate the next Studio Display could launch in late 2025, alongside a possible Pro Display XDR refresh. Apple has not confirmed details, but with MiniLED and ProMotion, the Studio Display 2 could be a major upgrade for creative professionals.
