Apple Pay is now available in Puerto Rico, marking a big step for digital payments on the island. Banco Popular, the largest bank in Puerto Rico, has introduced support for Apple’s contactless payment system. This allows local users to link their credit and debit cards to Apple Wallet.

Previously, Puerto Ricans could only use Apple Pay with U.S.-based bank accounts. Now, Banco Popular customers can make purchases with their iPhones or Apple Watches at any store that accepts Apple Pay.

A Long-Awaited Rollout

Apple Pay launched in the U.S. over a decade ago, but its expansion has been slow in some regions. In Puerto Rico, local banks had not supported the service until now, despite its widespread use in the U.S.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, highlighted the company’s push to expand its payment system. She mentioned that Apple worked with banks and retailers to increase adoption. Over time, stores accepting Apple Pay grew from just 3% to over 90%.

Global Expansion Continues

Alongside Puerto Rico, Apple has extended its “Tap to Provision” feature to Hong Kong, Macao, and Mongolia. This feature allows users to add new cards to Apple Wallet by tapping them on their iPhone.

Apple Pay is also expanding into more international markets, including Qatar, the UAE, and Paraguay. The company is working with banks worldwide to make contactless payments more accessible.

A New Era for Payments in Puerto Rico

Apple Pay’s arrival in Puerto Rico is expected to modernize the island’s payment system. With Banco Popular leading the way, more banks may follow. This could make contactless transactions a standard option for Puerto Ricans.

As digital wallets replace physical cards, Apple Pay’s expansion signals a move toward a cashless future. For consumers and businesses in Puerto Rico, this change offers a fast, secure, and convenient way to pay.
