Apple released the second release candidate (RC 2) for iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 on March 28. This follows the first RC issued earlier in the week. The new build (22E240) replaces the previous version (22E239) and is available to developers and beta testers.

This surprise second release suggests Apple found last-minute issues that needed attention before the public rollout, which is expected in the week of March 31.

New Features and Fixes

RC 2 builds on the features introduced earlier in the beta cycle. These include Apple Intelligence upgrades, better notification handling, and expanded language support.

The Image Playground app now offers a sketch-style output, adding to its creative tools. On the iPhone 15 Pro, users can access Visual Intelligence and a new Control Center section for AI features.

Apple also added new emoji, App Store download options like a “pause” button, and updates to the Shortcuts app. Beta testers spotted early signs of a CarPlay update designed for electric vehicle route planning.

Why RC 2 Matters

Apple hasn’t shared a detailed changelog for RC 2, but developers believe it targets minor bugs and stability issues. These fixes help ensure a smooth public release.

Even small tweaks in release candidates are important. They prevent larger problems from affecting millions of users after launch.

Public Release Imminent

The final version of iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 will likely arrive within days. Developers can download RC 2 through Apple’s developer portal now.

With this release, Apple shows its continued focus on performance, reliability, and the growing role of AI-powered features.
