Apple is reportedly testing its M5 iPad Pro ahead of a planned launch in the second half of 2025. The device is currently in what sources call “advanced testing,” which usually precedes full-scale production.

Bloomberg reports that Apple has developed four versions of the new iPad Pro, each with different configurations. The models are codenamed J817, J818, J820, and J821. Apple hasn’t revealed why it skipped J819, but the new lineup includes both 11-inch and 13-inch variants, with Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + Cellular options.

No Apple Modem—Yet

Although the upcoming M5 models offer notable performance gains, they won’t use Apple’s in-house C1 modem. That shift is expected with the M6-based iPads in 2027. Apple continues to develop its own modems to reduce reliance on third-party suppliers.

The current M4 iPad Pro launched in May 2024, featuring an OLED screen and thinner design. However, the model didn’t perform as well in the market as expected. Analysts believe this may be due to the new 13-inch iPad Air, which offered a similar screen size at a lower price.

A New Push for the Pro Line

Despite slower-than-expected sales for the M4 version, Apple appears focused on keeping its iPad Pro line competitive. With the M5 chip, users can expect improved processing power and battery efficiency.

Apple has already updated the 13-inch iPad Air with the M3 chip, further narrowing the gap between mid-range and pro tablets. This makes performance upgrades in the M5 even more critical for the Pro to stand out.

Looking Ahead

With testing well underway, Apple seems on track for a late-2025 release of the M5 iPad Pro. While it may be a minor upgrade in design, it signals a continued commitment to high-performance tablets.
