Apple has unexpectedly pulled the highly anticipated 7E99 firmware update for the USB-C AirPods Max. The update, announced in March 2025, promised exciting new features including 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio and ultra-low latency. However, the firmware has disappeared from Apple’s official update page just days before its expected rollout.
New Features on Hold for Creators and Audiophiles
The 7E99 update aimed to boost audio quality and performance for users pairing their AirPods Max with devices like the Apple Vision Pro, iPad, and Mac. The USB-C model, unlike the older Lightning version, supports a direct digital connection that allows true lossless audio.

For musicians, podcasters, and editors working on M-series Macs and iPads, the update was expected to improve creative workflows by reducing latency in apps like Logic Pro. Apple had marketed these enhancements as a major benefit exclusive to the newer AirPods Max model.
Quiet Removal Raises Questions
As of April 2, Apple’s firmware support page no longer lists 7E99 as available. Instead, the section now shows a vague “coming soon” message. Apple has not provided an official reason for the delay.
However, posts on the Apple Support Community suggest that a bug in iOS 18.4 may be preventing the firmware from installing correctly. Some users report that their devices failed to update or remained stuck on previous versions despite multiple attempts.
Users Must Wait for a Fix
At this time, Apple has not confirmed when—or if—it will re-release the 7E99 update. Until then, USB-C AirPods Max owners will need to wait to access the new features.
Apple may need to patch iOS 18.4 or issue a revised firmware version to resolve the problem. In the meantime, users looking forward to high-quality audio and improved latency will have to remain patient as the company investigates the issue.
