As the global PC market braces for economic headwinds and shifting demand, Apple is gaining ground. According to new data from IDC, Apple shipped 5.5 million Macs in Q1 2025—up from 4.8 million the year before. That growth bumped its global market share to 8.7%, compared to 8% in early 2024.

This progress stands out as most of the market struggles with stagnation. While overall PC shipments grew just 4.9%, Apple’s double-digit jump reflects growing interest in premium, AI-capable devices.

Mac Momentum Driven by AI and Integration

Apple’s rise comes at a time when businesses and consumers are increasingly looking for “AI-ready” hardware. The company’s M3-powered Macs offer improved performance, longer battery life, and on-device AI processing—key selling points in a competitive landscape.

Because Apple designs both its silicon and operating system, it delivers smoother integration than many Windows-based rivals. This advantage has attracted more enterprise customers, especially those already in Apple’s ecosystem.

Tariffs Threaten the Market’s Stability

However, Apple’s growth comes amid larger uncertainty. The Biden administration’s new tariffs on Chinese electronics are expected to raise prices across the board. While Apple has a tightly managed supply chain and is diversifying production to India and Vietnam, it remains exposed to cost pressures.

IDC notes that some Q1 strength was due to vendors rushing shipments ahead of tariff hikes. As the impact of those tariffs unfolds, consumers may see price increases, especially in the second half of the year.

What Comes Next?

Apple’s ability to control both hardware and software gives it unique leverage. Its steady push into AI hardware and seamless integration across devices may help it weather further disruption. Meanwhile, competitors like Lenovo, HP, and Dell will need to adjust quickly to a changing market.

While the road ahead may be rocky for the PC industry, Apple appears positioned to stay ahead—at least for now.
