Apple has announced a major step forward in its climate efforts. The tech giant has reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% since 2015. The announcement comes just ahead of Earth Day and is part of its ambitious “Apple 2030” goal to reach full carbon neutrality within five years.
Clean Energy and Supply Chain Overhaul
The company’s latest figures show it avoided 41 million metric tons of emissions in 2024 alone. This was largely achieved by switching to cleaner energy sources across its global supply chain. Apple now powers its manufacturing with 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity—up 17% from last year.

In addition, Apple has partnered with suppliers to cut emissions during the manufacturing of semiconductors and flat-panel displays. These processes normally release fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-GHGs), which are among the most harmful. So far, 26 semiconductor suppliers have pledged to reduce 90% of these emissions.
Reducing Waste and Conserving Water
Apple also made progress in reducing waste. In 2024, its suppliers diverted 600,000 metric tons of waste from landfills. Since launching the Supplier Clean Water Program in 2013, Apple and its partners have saved 90 billion gallons of freshwater, with 14 billion gallons saved just in 2024. The company now aims to replenish all freshwater used in high-stress regions within the next five years.
Recycled Materials and Eco-Friendly Products
Apple continues to ramp up its use of recycled materials. In 2025, it surpassed its target of using 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 100% recycled cobalt in batteries it designs. The MacBook Air now contains 55% recycled materials, the highest of any Apple device.
Earth Day Promotion Encourages Recycling
To celebrate Earth Day, Apple is offering 10% off select accessories to customers who recycle eligible old devices at participating stores. The promotion runs through May 16.
