OpenAI has introduced a powerful new feature for macOS users called “Work with Apps,” allowing ChatGPT to interact directly with apps like Notes, Terminal, and Xcode. This update, available across all ChatGPT tiers (including the free version), enhances how users can write, code, search, and edit using AI.
To activate the feature, users can press Option + Space or click the ChatGPT icon in the Mac menu bar. A new “Work with Apps” button also appears in the ChatGPT window when compatible apps are open.

Edit Smarter Inside Your Favorite Tools
One of the most exciting uses is code editing. ChatGPT now supports live editing in popular development environments, including Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, and Android Studio. Users can highlight specific code, ask ChatGPT to suggest or apply changes, and review those edits before finalizing them.
Instead of copying and pasting between windows, ChatGPT now shows code differences (“diffs”) and lets users approve edits line by line. This streamlines development workflows, especially for programmers juggling multiple files.
ChatGPT also works with plain text editors like TextEdit and Notes. After each session, it summarizes suggestions in the main chat window—making it easy to keep track of changes across apps.
Voice and Data Controls Included
The update includes enhancements to Advanced Voice Control, enabling users to open or select apps by speaking. While voice-controlled code editing isn’t live yet, OpenAI says it’s working on future improvements.
OpenAI has also clarified how it handles user data. By default, saved chats may be used for model training. However, users can turn this off in settings or use “Temporary Chat” mode to avoid saving history.
The Bottom Line
ChatGPT’s deeper integration with macOS apps marks a major step forward in practical AI tools. Whether you’re a developer, writer, or everyday user, this update makes it easier to get things done—faster and smarter—without leaving your favorite apps.
