Apple has shared a series of cutting-edge machine learning research papers, offering a rare glimpse into the technology powering Apple Intelligence. The company presented its findings at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) 2025, showcasing how new models and methods will fuel future advancements in AI across Apple devices.

Among the key innovations is “Depth Pro,” a fast and accurate system that generates high-resolution depth maps from single images—without needing any camera metadata. This breakthrough improves how Apple Intelligence understands and edits images.

Improving Image Generation and Understanding

Apple also revealed progress in text-to-image generation. One paper introduces “Activation Transport,” a framework that gives AI more control over image outputs using mathematical models. Another study introduces DART (Denoising Autoregressive Transformer), a new system that combines diffusion and language modeling to create sharper, more accurate images from text prompts.

Both technologies promise to make Apple’s image generation tools smarter and more flexible while cutting training time.

Smarter Reasoning, Safer AI

Apple isn’t just focused on visuals. It’s also improving how AI systems reason and make decisions. A paper titled “Step-by-Step Reasoning for Math Problems” shows how future AI could solve complex tasks more efficiently by focusing only on promising solutions.

Another study explores whether large language models can truly follow user instructions—and if they know when they’re doing it correctly. Apple researchers also analyzed how AI estimates its own uncertainty, which is vital for avoiding mistakes in critical tasks.

These insights could lead to safer AI agents that understand boundaries and follow directions more reliably.

Looking Ahead

At the ICLR event in Singapore, Apple is showcasing these developments through live demos and technical presentations. The company is also hosting sessions on computer vision and large language models at its dedicated booth.

With these new tools, Apple continues to invest heavily in AI—not just for today’s features, but for a smarter, safer future powered by Apple Intelligence.
