Bungie’s real-time tactics classic Myth has made a surprise return, thanks to the tireless work of its fanbase. Myth: Twice Born Edition, released on April 20, brings a visually upgraded version of the iconic series to modern Mac gamers. The remaster includes Myth: The Fallen Lords, Myth II: Soulblighter, and the Chimera expansion pack.
Though Bungie no longer develops the game—and ownership rights remain uncertain—a group of passionate fans, known as Project Magma, took it upon themselves to preserve and enhance the series for a new generation.

Over 15 Years in the Making
Project Magma has long supported the Myth series with updates and mods. Their earlier effort, the Magma Detailed Texture Megapack, enhanced hundreds of maps. However, those improvements made the rest of the game’s visuals feel dated.
To solve this, the team began a full visual overhaul. Using old 3D software and pixel-level editing, they painstakingly recreated or upscaled assets to ensure visual consistency across the entire game. The process took over 15 years.
Despite being a community-led project, the remaster isn’t officially sanctioned. According to reports, a commercial release via Nightdive was once considered but ultimately blocked by rights holder Take-Two. As a result, the remaster is now available for free.
Compatibility and Support
Twice Born Edition supports Apple Silicon, Intel Macs, and even legacy PowerPC systems—though older hardware may not support the upgraded visuals. Players will still need a copy of Myth II to run the remaster, but that title remains easy to find.
The project has received positive attention from both gamers and original Bungie developers. It stands as a powerful example of how fan communities can keep classic games alive—even when publishers step away.
