Apple Fined $570 Million by EU Over App Store Practices

The European Union has fined Apple $570 million for allegedly violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The penalty centers on Apple’s App Store policies, which the EU says prevented developers from informing users about alternative payment methods.

The fine, issued in April 2025, reflects the EU’s increasing scrutiny of large tech platforms. Officials argue Apple failed to let app developers steer customers to other offers, a key requirement under the DMA. The regulation aims to ensure fairness and competition across digital markets in the EU.

Political Tensions Behind a “Modest” Fine

Despite the size of the company, the $570 million fine is considered modest. That’s because the EU reportedly sought to avoid worsening trade tensions with the United States. Earlier talks between EU officials and U.S. President Donald Trump hinted that steeper penalties could prompt retaliatory tariffs.

EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera stated that the ruling sends a clear message about the DMA’s power. “It protects European consumers and levels the playing field,” she said. Ribera emphasized that both Apple and Meta, which also received a fine, failed to meet obligations under the law.

Apple to Appeal, Calls Policy Discriminatory

Apple has announced plans to appeal the fine. The company argues the EU is unfairly targeting it and forcing it to give away its technology to competitors. However, the EU noted Apple had cooperated early on by adjusting browser default settings in some areas.

In contrast, Meta was fined $227 million for its “consent or pay” ad model on Facebook, though its Marketplace has been exempted from future DMA regulation.

What Comes Next?

Apple now has 60 days to pay or risk additional penalties. While legal battles are expected, the fine signals the EU’s intent to enforce the DMA strictly. Whether Apple changes its App Store rules globally remains to be seen.
