Apple plans to revolutionize in-app transactions with iOS 18.1. This update allows developers to integrate NFC contactless payments directly within their apps using Secure Element (SE). Previously, iPhones limited NFC transactions to Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. Now, developers can offer in-app payments for various services, including in-store purchases, car keys, transit, and corporate badges.

Security and Privacy Drive New NFC APIs

Apple prioritizes security in its new NFC and SE APIs. These APIs use the Secure Element, a certified chip that securely stores sensitive information on the device. Apple’s proprietary technologies, including the Secure Enclave and biometric authentication, ensure that all transactions stay safe and private. Users initiate contactless transactions by opening the app or setting it as the default contactless app in iOS settings.

Global Rollout Begins with Select Countries

Developers need to enter a commercial agreement with Apple, request the NFC and SE entitlement, and pay associated fees to access these new capabilities. Initially, the NFC and SE APIs will launch in countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S. More regions will follow. This global rollout marks a significant step forward, offering developers and users more flexibility and security in handling contactless payments within apps.

Apple’s update in iOS 18.1 opens new possibilities for secure, in-app NFC transactions. It expands beyond the traditional Apple Pay ecosystem, paving the way for innovative app experiences.
